New Haven Apartment Moving: Elevator, Parking and Access Checklist

An apartment move in New Haven or East Haven can involve much more than the drive between addresses. A short trip may still mean a long walk from the truck, a reserved elevator and a narrow stair landing. Before asking for a written quote, put the access details for both buildings in one place. This checklist helps you explain the work clearly and spot questions that need an answer before moving day.

1. Confirm when each building is actually accessible

Ask the landlord, property manager or condo association for the permitted moving hours and the process for reserving a service elevator or loading area. Record the start and end of each reservation, who confirmed it and a contact for the day of the move. A requested moving date and an approved building reservation are separate details.

Check when you receive keys and whether the destination will be ready for furniture. If pickup must finish before delivery access opens, tell the moving office before agreeing on a plan. Do not assume a gap includes storage or overnight truck holding; those arrangements need separate review.

2. Describe the full route from the truck to the room

For each address, note the unit and floor, exterior steps, interior stair flights, elevator access and the walking distance from a legal unloading location. Include basement or attic items and any second entrance. If the street address faces one road but the loading door is on another, explain that explicitly.

Take clear photos of tight turns, stair landings, doorways and the route from the loading entrance. Avoid sharing access codes in a public form or photograph. Send sensitive entry instructions directly to the office through an agreed channel when needed.

3. Check parking and unloading arrangements before the truck arrives

Identify the intended truck position at pickup and delivery. Ask the property manager about loading-dock dimensions, garage clearance, driveway restrictions and whether another tenant has the same moving window. For street loading, confirm current arrangements with the appropriate local authority or property contact; do not treat an available curb space as a reservation.

Tell the office if the truck cannot park close to the entrance. A long carry, a shared elevator or a loading window can affect the crew and time needed even when the apartment has only one bedroom. Share any known restrictions before the quote is finalized.

4. Measure the furniture and the narrowest access points

List the largest pieces: sofas, sectionals, mattresses, bed frames, dressers, desks and dining furniture. Measure the furniture and the narrowest doorways, elevator opening and relevant turns along the route. Photos and measurements help the office identify an access question; they do not guarantee that a piece will fit.

Say which pieces may need disassembly and whether instructions or unusual fasteners are involved. Flag pianos, gun safes, stone tops, adjustable beds and other unusually heavy or delicate items separately. Do not assume that adding more movers automatically resolves a clearance or specialty-handling problem.

5. Choose truck-and-crew service or labor only

For full-service moving, A Plus Moving LLC provides the truck and moving crew. Explain whether you also need packing or unpacking reviewed as part of the job. For labor-only help, you arrange the rental truck, trailer or container and its transportation; share its size, location and available loading time.

If you are comparing those approaches, include the same inventory and building-access details for each. A crew-size option is part of an hourly quote, not a guaranteed total for the entire move. Ask the office to put the applicable minimum, additional crew-hour rate and any verified travel or specialty terms in writing.

6. Prepare a useful inventory and label the destination

A room count alone does not show how much work is involved. Add a furniture list and an approximate box count, including closets, balcony furniture and storage areas. Identify anything being donated, staying behind or going to a different destination so it is not mistaken for part of the move.

Label boxes with the destination room and mark fragile items clearly. Keep hallways and exits clear, and plan separately for children, pets and essentials you will carry yourself. Tell the office which packing tasks will still be unfinished when the crew is expected.

Copy this access summary into your quote request

Move date and preferred window: ___. Pickup address/unit/floor: ___. Delivery address/unit/floor: ___. Service needed: truck and crew / labor only / packing. Furniture and approximate box count: ___. Pickup stairs/elevator and loading route: ___. Delivery stairs/elevator and loading route: ___. Building reservations and contact: ___. Truck/container size if supplied by you: ___. Unusually heavy items and photos available: ___. Questions still awaiting the property manager: ___.

For example, “elevator building” is less useful than “fourth-floor unit; service elevator reserved 10 a.m.–noon; loading entrance behind the building; two steps between the dock and elevator.” That is a planning example, not a description of an A Plus customer or a promised moving time.
